My son had the original engine, and we bought this new one thinking is would be different. Unfortunately apart from the noises and lights, it is exactly the same engine, which is a shame, as there is capacity to have opening shutters on the sides.
Also, the figures are very difficult to get in and out of the engine, which a 3/4 year old finds really tricky a nd frustrating. This is also the case with Venus, which we also purchased. In terms of the figures, Fireman Sam and Penny have swivel heads, yet Tom doesn’t [with my son trying to take his head off!]. Also, where an earth do you get Fire Officer Steele and Elvis from?Fireman Sam – Friction Fire Engine with Sam Figure

My three year old loves this toy and has been playing with it every day since his birthday in September. Much longer than with all the other toys he’s been given.
It is tricky to get the figures in and out but this is actually not a bad thing as it improves the child’s hand coordination skills. Eventually, my son’s figured out how to get Sam in and out of the engine, hurray!
Of course, the mirrors broke off pretty much straight away, but hey, they were of no use anyway.
All in all, this is one of the best toys I’ve ever bought for my son (even though I think it’s overpriced). HE loves it, that’s important. Get one and add a helmet – that’s the ultimate joy for any little Fireman Sam fan!
